Event:

Cisco Live

Location:

San Diego Convention Center

Objective

Cisco Live, an annual tech conference attended by 25,000+ innovators and enthusiasts of the future of digital, along with Mirror Show Management (MSM), tasked AV Images to help design a display where the two halls of the convention center met.

Challenges & Approaches

Due to the location of the display, where two halls crossed, nothing could be rigged from above. After discussing traditional solutions of simply displaying graphics in the hall, we recommended a self-supporting LED tunnel using truss and pipes, which, at the time, was pushing the boundaries of LED usage.

Visitors could engage with a gaming display at the tunnel’s entrance, and then inside the tunnel, which ran 3 meters in height, and 9 meters in length, video displayed on the walls, and graphics shown on the ceiling. Since the LED didn’t go all the way to the ground, we put speakers from the ground up by two feet.

Another challenge was, because that particular area of the convention center was a no-fly zone, we couldn’t use motors or fly in materials from above, so the application of the ceiling graphics were especially labor intensive: applying one tile at a time, upside down in a lift or on ladders. In other words, for the time it took to do one panel on the ceiling, we could do five panels on a side wall.

In addition, we needed to act quickly when we learned two days before showtime that the length of the video for the tunnel walls was much longer than initially planned for. Instead of running on a loop via computer playback, we switched to Disguise d3 media servers so we could feed multiple 4K rasters of a looped 15-minute video to the walls and ceiling.

Lastly, with video on the side walls and static content on the ceiling we needed to ensure the storytelling and aesthetic was congruent.

Outcome

After months of planning and days of setup, the tunnel was a hit. Heavy traffic with attendees taking photos and uploading to social media, widely heard comments about the display being “awesome” was proof of success. Given the challenges, the technology in 2019, and the content limitations, we still created a seamless side walls-to ceiling tunnel display.

Our collaboration with the union and our stakeholders, prior experience with truss and pipe, and innovative solutions resulted in a flawless 450-LED-panel structure and an awe-inspiring display for Cisco Live attendees.
